Present and Past Tense
Put the verbs in
brackets into the correct present tense.
1.
Ann sees Paul
putting on his coat and says: Where are you going, Paul?
Paul: I’m going to buy some fruits.
2.
Mary sees
Peter standing at the bus stop.
Mary: Hello, Peter. What bus do you waiting for ?
Peter: Hello, Mary. I’m waiting for a 9 or a 14.
3.
Mary: You usually went
to work by a car, don’t you?
Peter: Yes, but the car belonged to my mother and she sometimes wanted
it. She uses it today to take Tom to the dentist.
4.
Mary: Where did
he come from?
Ann: He come from Japan. He is a very clever boy; he can speak
four languages.
5.
Ann: I’ve got a
letter from Hugh. He said he’ll come to London next week and wanted
us to meet him for lunch.
6.
Mrs. Jones: My
daughter never wrote to me so I never know what she was doing.

Mrs Smith: Yes, I hear from him every week. He seems to
like writing letters.

It depends on the kind of apples.

I don’t know; I don’t keep an account. Anyway she’ll
leave next week.
9.
Jack: How much
longer you will stay in England?
Paul: Only one more day. I will leave tomorrow night. I will
have been going to Holland for two weeks.
10. Mrs Jones: What are you looking for, Tom?
Mr Jones: I’m looking for a garage key. I always look for
the garage key, because nobody ever putted it back on its hook.
Mrs. Jones: I always put it back on its hook. Why don’t you
try your pockets? (I advise you to try your pockets)

brackets into the correct tense; simple past or past continuous.
11. Peter and Ann decided to redecorate their sitting-room
themselves. They chose cream paint for the woodwork and apricot for the
walls. When John was looking in to see how they were getting on,
Ann was mixing the paint, and Peter was washing down the walls.
They were glad to see John and asked
if he was doing anything special that day. He hastily replied he would
have gone to the theatre and went away at once, because he knew
that they were looking for
someone to help them.

cases the present perfect continuous is also possible.
12. Paul: I have been playing football since I was five years old.
Tom: Did you play since you came to England?
Paul Oh, yes. I played quite a lot. I joined a club the
day after I arrived.
13. Ann: I’m skiing when I’m at the university, but I broke a
leg five years ago and since then I don’t do any.
14. This bicycle has been being in our family for fourteen years. My
father has been using it for the first five years, my brother has
been riding it for the next five, and I have been having it for the
last four.

as some conditionals and imperatives; for be able use can/could where possible
15. Dear Hilda
I just hear that my brother isn’t very well, and I like to
go and see her. The trouble is I can’t take my cat Lupus with me. You think
you could be able possibly look after him for a week? You would be
having him for a week last year, you remember, and you said
he is no trouble, and get on well with your dog.
If you can be able have him, I could be able bring him a long
any time that suit you. He has his own bed and bowl, and I bring
enough tinned cat food to last him a week.
But if isn’t convenient, don’t hesitate to say so. There is
quite good kennels near here, and they have been taking him if I asked.
He was there once before and seemed to get on all right.
